Daniel Shechtman has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research into quasicrystals – aperiodic structures whose component building blocks never follow a repeated pattern. The research fundamentally alters how we conceive solid matter and allows scientists to being experimenting with potential quasicrystal applications.
